During the Edo period, large numbers of books were brought to Japan from China by Chinese ships. One of these books, the Qīngjiālù, published in 1830 in Sūzhōu, discusses the annual events or observances of Jiānán. Sūzhōu was located close to Zhàpŭ, Zhejiang Province, a port that the Japanese trading ships utilized, and considered a convenient location for the book-loving Japanese populace. The Qīngjiālù entered Japan soon after its publication in China, and reached Edo relatively early. Seven years later, a revised version for the ease of the Japanese reader was printed. This essay clarifies the details of the revision.
