Abstract
Translating Japanese law books was one of the major approaches in the Late Qing reform to absorb the Western legal system via the medium of Japan. The present paper investigates the Chinese translation of Japanese books on prisons during this period. Of the thirty-two books in examined, which may be classified either as monographs or encyclopedic works, eighteen are by Dr. Ogawa Sigejiro, the foremost authority of prison study in Japan. The paper shows that all but two translated works of prison studies are Japanese in origin, making it clear that Meiji Japan played a significant role in China’s progress of modernization in its legal system.
