Description

Dragon, the symbol of Chinese imperial power, is one of the famous visual icons of China. However, the sacred creature was usually depicted as the grim, evil monster, the western dragon, in 19th century western pictorials. In several caricatures, the western dragon in famous Christian tale, ‶St. George and the dragon" was replaced by the Chinese one, as an allegory of the contradiction between China and Western countries. Through inspecting the deliberate confusion on the image of Chinese and Western dragons, this article attempt to reveal a western-centered visual construction of Chinese image in 19th century pictorials.
