Description
In the 19th century, Korean Peninsula has been called "Hermit Kingdom" by westerners. In 1871, Felice Beato, a famous photographer who joined America Expedition to Korea, took around 50 photos considered as the earliest pictures of Korean. These photos not only published as albums, but also in illustrated newspapers, such as Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspapers. However, if we compare the pictorial illustrations and the photos, it's easy to find out that these pictures were modified from the original ones. Adding new elements, adjusting structures, changing characters, these changes seemingly created different Korean "Stories" for political debates especially on the efficiency of the expedition itself.
