Abstract
This essay explores Nakae Tōju’s religious perspective and the relationship of “the self” and “the supreme”. Tōju was sympathetic to the traditional Chinese beliefs towards “the supreme” and created his own unique thought based on this and his own experiences. First is the conflicting “true nature” 本来性 and “realism” 現実性, both of which are posited in the differing dimensions of “ideal” and “real”: the all encompassing “supreme” versus the acquired life of humanity are juxtaposed. Second, with the Ryochi 良知 which plays a figure as certain persona of the will of supreme, morality is subsumed into religious belief. The important practice of filial piety also finally returns to the reverence with which the supreme, or the Great Father, are held. While this represents a divergence from the Yangming School, nevertheless, Tōju’s non-Yangming school thoughts and belief can in itself be seen as a development of history of ideas and placed precisely within its history, something of great importance.
