Description

The purpose of this study is to understand the spatial characteristics of Turkish cities. On the basis of spatial examination of urban centers in 14 cities in 2008, we drew the plans of the central commercial areas (ars in Turkish) of 11 cities (Goynuk, Tarakl, Mudurnu, Bolu, Safranbolu, Kastamonu, Nallhan, Beypazar, Konya, Afyon, Kutahya). The following conclusions can be drawn from our analytical observation. The spatial configuration of ars depends upon the size of the city. The ars plan of the 7 cities employs a grid-like configuration. Historical buildings in the ars such as Han (i. e. lodging houses and offices for caravans) are restored, kept, and utilized as commercial buildings, hotels, cafes, galleries, workshops, etc. There are many shops and workshops producing and selling shoes and clothing. As a traditional space, ars are also important for sightseeing.
