Description

The classification of the teachings into three periods by the Faxiangschool has its textual basis in the Sαmdhinirmocαnαsntra, and the most ●important commentary of that sUtra is the万θshenMブing shu byW6nch’uk, who is regarded as not having been officially authorized by themainstream of the Faxiang school. Regarding W6nch’uk’s views ondoctrinal classification(Ch.1)α吻ゼαo), it has been generally agreed that hedid not adhere to the standard position of the Yogacara, instead mergingthe second period teaching(the doctrine of 62〃z夕α厩),and the third periodteaching. However, a closer look at his commentary leads to theconclusion that he describes the second period teaching as containing thesubstance of the 1)αratantrasvαbhdiva and the 1)arinisl)annαsvabhdivαas the ●Yogacara doctrine, and he is conscious of following Dharmapala’s andXuanzang’s thought.216
