The relationship between 3-year-old children's attitudes and their parents' reactions at the start of kindergarten life were investigated, through an analysis of diaries written by 79 parents. Three types of children's attitudes were identified; `smiles'(children smiled in the morning and when returning from kindergarten),'tears and smiles'(children cried in the morning, but smiled when returning from kindergarten). and `anxiety'(children neither cried in the morning, nor smiled when returning from kindergarten). Of the children,65.8% had smiles, 21.5% tears and smiles and 7.6% anxiety. These differences were examined from the perspective of children's knowledge and experience about kindergarten life. Results indicated that parents responded to their children's attitudes, by guessing the meanings of the children's attitudes. As a result, they felt either easy or uneasy. It was concluded that parents were involved in kindergarten life through their children's attitudes and that some parents experienced separation anxiety.
