The aim of this essay is to discuss Cornelia Thornwell, the heroine of Upton Sinclair's Boston (1928), in the social context of the day. The novel begins in 1920, when one of the most significant decades in American history started. The 1920s saw women starting to cut conspicuous figures in various aspects of their lives. These women were strikingly new to the contemporary, "ordinary" generation. They were called "the New Woman," and tried to defy the traditional sense of values. The author of this essay interprets Cornelia as an expression of a"New Woman." When her husband passes away, she leaves her home mainly because she is determined to live life on her own terms, even though she is already 60. She happens to become acquainted with Bartolomeo Vanzetti and subsequently discovers how people at the bottom of the social ladder live. The discovery gives her the impetus to think more about her way of life and act of her own free will.
