Abstract

In 2012 and 2013 the authors surveyed 163 inner alley spaces in 12 European cities(Paris, Lyon, Torino, Milano, Venice, Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Prague, Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna.)This is a report of the measurement result including detailed mapping, photographs, explanations of how they are topographically connected with their city structures, how they function, whether they are actually used or neglected, and brief histories of some of the spaces. This is our first step in establishing indices for the morphological classification of these various narrow paths sometimes called alleys, passages, patios, mews, galleries, or lanes. We expect this to be helpful in urban planning.
