Abstract
The Counseling Room affiliated with the Showa Women's University has been providing group therapy for improving social skills in parallel with individual psychotherapy for early adolescent girls. Group therapy, and other forms of psychological support suitable for early adolescent girls were investigated, and the practice of the group therapy is reported. Clinical psychologists and graduate students in clinical psychology held 15 group therapy sessions over a period of one and a half years. The program aimed to: (1) reduce anxiety about group participation, thereby promoting self-confidence; (2) give opportunities to experientially learn communication skills necessary for adolescent girls; and (3) give opportunities to experientiallly learn appropriate self-assertion. After every session, the staff members discussed and improved the program contents based on participants' behavior. As a result, the participants became able to voluntarily and proactively communicate with each other. Lastly, the importance of concurrent implementation of group therapy with individual psychotherapy, characteristics of group therapy for early adolescent girls, and the significance of the program as clinical training for students in graduate programs of clinical psychology are discussed.
