Abstract

AbstractSince my first trial of collecting learner language data, almost 25 years have passed. Finally in the year 2010, both Japanese university students' essays and spoken interview data were included into the International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE) and the Louvain International Database of Spoken English Interlanguage (LINDSEI), respectively, which have been compiled and published at the Center for English Corpus Linguistics, University of Louvain, in Belgium. The ICLE and LINDSEI include huge amounts of electronic data from students from 11 to 16 different language backgrounds and make it possible to compare the interlanguage features among them. The present paper explores special features of Japanese university students' English interlanguage and tries to present a direction of English language teaching in Japan.
