The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial characteristics of Turkish cities. On the basis of spatial examination of urban centers in 18 cities in the Western Anatolian region, the author drew their urban plans as well as the plans of the central areas of the following cities: I・stanbul, Bursa, Balkesir, Tarakl, Goynuk, Mudurnu, Bolu, Safranbolu, Kastamonu, Nallhan, Beypazar, Konya, Bergama, Kutahya, Afyonkarahisar, Usak, Tire and I・zmir. The urban centers have multiple functions as public spaces. This paper particularly focuses on the communication function. The author analyzed the elements which promote communication and attract people towards the centers of urban areas. The following conclusions can be drawn from the observation and analysis. Historical buildings utilized for commercial purposes, for example, mosques, turkish baths(Hamam in Turkish), tea salons(ayhane in Turkish), barber shops and open spaces like plazas and courtyards function as important communication space. ayhane and barber shops are daily communication spaces. Mosques and plazas supply people with special spaces for religious festivities. Such urban areas are used only by men except in large cities.
