説明
The theme of this study is Shannon's Way as love story: the hero and the heroine's love and the obstacles to their marriage. The novel was written by a Scottish writer and physician, A.J.Cronin(in full Archibald Joseph Cronin, 1896-1981)and published in 1948. The setting of the story is chiefly Winton, a fictitious city based on Glasgow. The hero is Robert Shannon, a twenty-four-year-old poor but excellent researcher and doctor whose ambition is to be successful in medical science by a great discovery. He falls passionately in love with Jean Law, who is one of his students at a university and who is attracted to Robert. They love each other. Robert wants to marry her by all means. There are, however, two serious obstacles to their marriage. One is that they belong to different churches. Robert is a Catholic and Jean is a member of the Brethren, a Protestant denomination. The other obstacle is that Jean has a fiance named Malcolm Hodden, a young and devout teacher, who is treated like a family member by the Laws. The novel has a happy ending: Robert and Jean will be able to marry. This paper discusses the features of the two major characters, their religion and attitudes to it. It also explains how they suffer from the differences of religion, mental conflicts, quarrels, and other hindrances such as the strategies of Jean's father to keep his daughter away from Robert. The purpose of this paper is to make clear Shannon's way of life, the importance of religion to Christians, the opposition to mixed marriage, and Cronin's messages to readers. Cronin's best novel is probably The Citadel. It is very interesting and epoch-making because of the hero's character, his relations with other major characters, and its revelation of medical problems. The reason why I chose Shannon's Way, not Cronin's masterpiece, is that it is unique and important and almost unprecedented in that it makes use of religion as an obstacle to marriage, while in the case of other famous English novels, the obstacles are usually the characters' social positions, personalities, thoughts, economic status, or some insuperable problem other than religious matters. To readers, especially those who face difficulties related to mixed marriage, Shannon's Way may offer some good advice.
