Description
The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial characteristics of Turkish cities. Based upon spatial examination of urban centers in 18 cities in the Western Anatolia region(I・stanbul, Bursa, Balkesir, Tarakl, Bergama, Kutahya, Usak, Afyonkarahisar, I・zmir, Tire, Goynuk, Mudurnu, Bolu, Safranbolu, Kastamonu, Nallhan, Beypazar and Konya), the author drafted plans of the cities as well as plans of the urban centers of each of them. The urban centers have multiple functions as public spaces. This paper particularly focuses on open spaces. The author analyzes the spatial characteristics of plazas, streets and courtyards also observing how and in what manner they have been used. The following conclusions were drawn from the observations and analysis: plazas and main roads connect traditional commercial areas(ars in Turkish)to new town centers. Also, plazas supply special spaces for religious festivities for the residents. The historical buildings are utilized for commercial purposes, for example as hotels and souvenir shops, while courtyards of buildings are utilized as tea gardens and galleries.
