Abstract

This study is research on a dance company "Project Ohyama" which I belong to. The choreographers and dancers in that company have graduated from the same university. I have been participating in this company from its starting. We have experienced many turning points since we graduated, and now we are about to get a certain position in Japanese dance scene. Our dance company offers contemporary dance. Contemporary dance began in the 1980's. It overwhelmed Japanese dance scene of the 1990's by taking sensibility to the times, and putting new and striking production. But now, Contemporary dance is in a trasition period. That is because of that it has been facing to difficulties to find fresh breath in its works, and also many of dancers are struggling to make their living in Japan. Most of Japanese dance companies are moderate unities and have tendency to be organized without contract or provisions. Therefore I research into the case of the dance company in Japan, and consider its history (elements) through interview to the dancers.. This paper is a first step and so I'm planning the next detailed development.
