Abstract

The Ukulele is a small string instrument for folk music, which was brought from Hawaii. The Ukulele'sfirst boom was in the 1920s, and then it faced its second boom in the 1950s. After those periods, makers likeGibson stopped producing Ukuleles, and only small hand crafted makers continued to produce the Ukulele.Today the Ukulele is experiencing its third boom through the introduction of the Japanese Company"Urabe" the Kyoto maker of a new sounding Ukulele. Unlike the traditional Ukulele that carried soft andweak sounds, Urabe has created stronger and clearer sounding Ukuleles through its development of a" Ba"in and around Kyoto. This" Ba" has succeeded in gathering materials and information, and interactively hasdeveloped and marketed its product to its biggest market Tokyo.
