Description

As a part of our extended series of cytological studies on rust fungi, fine structures of pycnidia of Gymnosporangium asiaticum Miyabe ex Yamada on pear leaves were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Many pycnidia were observed on upper surfaces of pear leaves 10 days after inoculation. Numerous periphyses with smooth surfaces arose from the pycnidia and their basal parts were covered with abundant pycniospores. Pycniospores of ellipsoidal shapes had smooth surfaces. Transmission electron microscopy reveald that many periphyses had emerged outwards from the opening of pycnidial ostiole. Since no septa were seen in periphyses, they seemed to be unicellular. Pycniosporophores had arisen from the cell-mass at the basal part of pycnidium. Pycniospores were separated by septa from the pycniosporophores. At the neck-point where a septum had formed to separate a pycniospore from a pycniosporophore, cell walls of pycniosporsphores appeared degenerating to from a layered mass outside the neck-point. Intercellular hyphae were seen in mesophyll spaces and intracellular hyphae which were surrounded by an electron-lucent, encapsulation-like structure were observed in some mesophyll cells. All the fungal structures obseved in this study were uninucleate.
