説明

In the process or learning Japanese sounds, learners with Korean as their L 1 encounter significant difficulties in recognizing and producing Japanese accent and intonation. It was noticed in particular, that the learners’ production of word initial plosives had a tendency to differ, in terms of the pitch pattern, depending on the whether the intial is a voiced or voiceless plosive. This was seen as a potential trend as the learners attempted to pronounce Japanese words that included plosives in the word initial. The research investigated the pitch patterns of Korean L 1 Japanese language learners by means of selecting Korean and Japanese words as well as meaningless sound combinations that included a plosive in the word initial. All the words selected were either two or four mora in length. When the voiceless word initial plosives in Japanese words were pronounced, the Korean learners had a tendency to produce a head high in a high-low pitch pattern. In contrast, during the production of voiced word initial plosives, middle-high and plane-pitch patterns appeared. The first mora was low, but the subsequent mora rose in pitch. Analysts or the Korean language indicated a similar tendency. The research indicates that Korean L 1 learners would benefit from classroom activities to build awareness of these phonological features. Discrimination exercises based on minimal pairs offer a clear benefit.
