The present article explores the concept on peace and security put forward by Okinawa Women Act Against Military Violence, a peace movement initiative of women living in Okinawa, where the US military facilities located in Japan are highly concentrated. The author analyzes the movement as a feminist peace movement, as an endeavor to explore the interrelationship between sexism and militarism. Women in the OWAAMV movement have theorized their historical experience of violence against women by the US military personnel, and present a concept of “military violence,”a structural understanding of gender based violence by the military. From this perspective, they challenge the present militarized national security system by arguing that it violates basic human rights of people especially women and children and only creates insecurity. The author argues that their concept on peace and security resonates with the analysis of feminist scholarship of peace studies and international relations, and poses a significant critique to an emerging concept of human security.
