日本国内で行われている習得研究の圧倒的多数は、記述的妥当性に留まっている（長友 1998）が、今後、国内で多く行われてきた記述的研究にfocus on form (FonF) 理論を取り込んでいくことで、心理言語学的な実証に基づいた教授法への提言につながっていくだろうと言われている（小柳 印刷中）。本稿では、FonF研究を、「どんなタイプのFonFがどんなタイプの言語形式に有効であるのか」といった観点で、まず海外で行われてきた研究を概観する。具体的には、①「目標言語の領域と肯定証拠・否定証拠との関係」②「有標性理論と投射問題」③「ルールの難しさと明示的文法説明の効果」という3つの理論を検証した研究を詳しく見ていくとともに、今後の方向性を考察する。さらにそれによって、日本語習得研究においては今後どのような研究が行われていくべきであるのかを具体的に提示する。

Much of the second language acquisition research conducted in Japan is still descriptive (Nagatomo 1998). Koyanagi (In press) said that by combining the results of these descriptive studies with focus on form (FonF) theories, it is possible to come up with new teaching methods based on empirical psycholinguistic evidence. The research reported in this paper attempted to determine which type of FonF is effective for what type of linguistic form. First, I surveyed the research conducted so far, with special attention on 1) the relation between the domain range of the target language, and positive and negative evidence, 2) markedness and projection problems, and 3) the relationship of rule difficulty (complexity) to the effectiveness of explicit grammar instruction. Second, I contemplate the possible future directions for this kind of research. Finally, I attempt to concretely demonstrate the direction in which Japanese second language acquisition studies should progress in the future.
