Description
The aim of this study is to clarify how Nijinsky’s choreography, Le Sacre du Printemps was accepted and evaluated by the Parisians, through the analysis of reviews published from the premiere performance date to the early following year in France. This investigation adopts two methods. One is Quantitative Contents Analysis, which calculates the appearance frequency of the words, and the other is Contents Analysis to confirm the phase of the arguing points. The results are as follows: 1)The reviews contained pros and cons during the performance period, 2) the music and the movement attracted of the audience, and the evaluations changed over time, 3)the most characteristic review is of Jacques Rivière, which showed a particularly strong positive view. Further developing the analysis, it was concluded that Le Sacre provoked the Parisians to reconsider the conventional idea of the dancing body. Nijinsky’s choreography received negative comments from the conservative critics who regarded dance as a symbol of civilized human body. On the other hand, liberal people such as Rivière eventually refute a value of expressiveness in natural and uncivilized human body. Therefore, Le Sacre was accepted as a pioneer of new dance, broaden the idea of the dancing body.
