Description
Chinese writer Yu Dafu (1896-1945) used many foreign language expressions from English, German,\ French, etc. in his novels. He could use expressions in these languages because he was well educated\ in Western literature. Besides using European expressions, he also used many wasei kango (Japanesecreated\ Chinese words), Japanese onomatopoetic expressions, and idiomatic expressions. These are not\ written directly in Japanese but certainly, only a writer who studied in Japan would be able to use\ such expressions. Among these expressions, at that time, there might have been some that Yu could\ not express in Chinese.\ In the late Qing Dynasty, China witnessed the vernacular movement. From the foreign language\ expressions used in Yu’s novels, it can be seen that he was positive about creating a new literature\ and a new style. The frequent use of foreign expressions is one of the characteristics of Yu’s novels,\ which can also be regarded as a trace of the New Literature Movement that occurred during the period\ of the May Fourth Movement.
