The purpose of this study was intended to investigate the role of army (especially the 8 Army Division and the 17 Regiment) for introduction of skiing in Akita prefecture at the end of Meiji era. The following facts were revealed. 1. Nagai, a professor of gymnastics in Tokyo Higher Normal School, in 1910 demonstrated skiing in Akita during a course in gymnastics. But skiing was not spread in Akita. 2. Yamane, the commander of the 8 Army Division, sent four officers of the division to Takada City for skiing course by Lerch. After returning from Takada, the three officers gave instructions on skiing to the troops in their regiments. 3. Skiing lessons in Akita by Murano, a first lieutenant of the 17 Regiment, in February 1912 was given to 11 offcers and over 20 civilians for 15 days in Sensyu park and Kinshoji Mountain. In last day Murano and 14 civilians challenged to climb Taihei mountains by skiing. 4. Skiing became popular in Akita Prefecture due to courses by army and a directive instruction by the governor to promote skiing.
