Ecclesiastes is a problematic book, for it is very difficult to grasp Qahelet's real intention. Recent studies have suggested that this book should be used as a textbook for the Jewish youth. The well-known saying, 'Futility of futilities. All is futility' is his final conclusion? Is there a teacher who wants to teach such a pessimistic, negative world-view to his promising students? I have reconsidered Qahelet's thought, focussing on his view of knowledge. My conclusion is that Qahelet's thought is a positively realistic, egalitarian one.
