Abstract

WAKENIWAIKANAI is one of the least used forms by intermediate Japanese learners in class. However, it is one of the forms that intermediate to advanced Japanese students really should learn to use. This research reveals the meaning and use of this form by calculating the frequency of enclitic phrases, verbs and adjuncts in the Japanese native corpus. This study also demonstrates the differences between the standard teaching materials and methods and the way this form is used by Japanese native speakers. Therefore, we propose this new teaching guidance of WAKENIWAIKANAI on the basis of these results.
