Abstract

type:text

What are the requirements of contemporary social theory ? After the demise of such leading theorists as Luhmann and Bourdieu, it is time we evaluated the achievements of social theory in the post-Parsons era. As is generally known, one of the challenges for current social thinkers is proposing an integrative explanation based on the conflict between Parsons' arguments and many critiques on them. Therefore, it is inevitable for us to review both of these if we seek to determine 'what they did'. Based on these assumptions, this paper attempts to survey the critiques on Parsons' arguments and to highlight their common awareness of Parsons' difficulties. If current thinkers aim to criticize Parsons in a different manner than earlier critics, it is obvious that they should clarify their attitude towards the above awareness. Developing a new theory that is suited to the times is a minimum requirement, and this paper attempts to define its theoretical origin.
