本稿は、平成17 年度検定済の中学校英語検定教科書における発音を中心とした音声指導項目に焦点をあて、発音記号、強勢、イントネーション、単語間の音のつながり（連結・脱落・同化）、ポーズ（意味グループごとの区切り）、OI（音声表現）指導の６項目を整理し、それらの提示内容や提示方法を分析した。結果は、6 社の検定教科書が発音・音声のしくみを各項目に渡り提示し、英語音声学の基本的な指導材料を一見示しているかのように見えながらも、各社の音声指導項目の扱い方による大きな差異が明確になった。どの教科書を使用したかによる学習者への影響が大きいことが指摘される。

The purpose of this research was to examine variations in pronunciation instruction currently included in Japanese junior high school English textbooks. Six English textbook series were analyzed in terms of how they treat six categories of phonetically related items: phonetic alphabets, stress, intonation, connected speech, identifying thought groups, and oral interpretation. The research found that each textbook provides some coverage of these categories, with explanations of phonetics theory. However, because each textbook＇s emphasis is different, the learners＇ acquisition of pronunciation and phonetic knowledge is likely to vary greatly.
