It is said that there has been a decline in the scholastic ability of university students in Japan, and the Japanese ability of these students today has declined as well. With this in mind, we conducted research into the ability of students at Toyohashi University of Technology to read and write kanji. Some of the insights we gained as a result of the research are as follows: 1. There is a big difference between the ability to write kanji and the ability to read kanji. 2. The ability to write kanji from studying in junior high school is very low. 3. The ability to read kanji from studying in junior high school is unexpectedly high. 4. The ability to write kanji and hiragana accurately is low. 5. Vocabulary ability is very low. Building on these results, we would like to conduct further research into the Japanese ability of university students using different techniques.
