Fluorescence spectra have been investigated for oil colors using a pulsed nitrogen laser (λ=337.1 nm, pulse duration = 5ns) in order to apply a laser-induced fluorescence technique to identification of pigments in oil paints. Fluorescence spectra using the laser are compared with those using a mercury lamp. The nitrogen laser is more suitable than the mercury lamp for identification of pigments. Effects of secular change and exposure to intense light on fluorescence spectra are examined. These effects are not so serious for identification of pigments. Fluorescence spectra of poppy oil, glue and casein are also reported.
