The Ange Group, lower-upper Pliocene in age, is distributed along the western area of the Ise Bay, Mie Prefecture, and the Soni and Tsugeno Groups, considered to be lower Pliocene in age, develope in the north-western area of Nara Prefecture. About 120 samples consisting of carbonaceous mudstone, grey shale, blue-grey siltstone and lignite are collected from 91 localities of these Groups. Pollen-analytical results are shown in Tables 1-3 and Text-figs. 2,3,5, respectively. The Biroku-Kono bed and Tohima bed of the Ange Group, Furonotani-tuff breccia of the Soni Group and Tomoda mud-and siltstone bed of the Tsugeno Group are characterized by the presence of pollen grains of Carya-Liquidambar-Nyssa. It proves that they are almost same horizon, and correlative with the Jigokudani formation in Nara City. Pollen grains of Persicaria and other NAP are predominate in the Ange Group, while these of Caesalpinia and Hemitrapa? present in the Soni and Tsugeno Groups.
