The Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) is an ingeneous use of one of the characteristics of superconductivity so called permanent current. The current in superconducting coil flows permanently because of the zero resistance of superconducing cable. The energy is stored in a magnetic field as a distored space. The most excellent feature of SMES is the storage efficiency. It is better than 90% while other means, for instance, pumped hydro, battery storage and compressed air storage have poor efficiency of around 65%. The point is, however, the large scale application of superconductivity for utility scale SMES is far beyond the present technological level. In this paper the basic principle, engineering feasibility and economics of SMES for utility have been described. The conclusion derived from this study is that the large scale SMES as the pumped hydro alternative is technologicaly feasible and has the good potential for commercialization. The small size SMES has also been discussed and the possibility of commercialization is measured.
