Recently in Japan, talking in class in universities, in addition to elementary schools, junior-high schools, and high schools, has been one of the severe problems of school education. It seems that such a phenomenon has become a serious concern, especially in large classrooms. In my particular case, students in my class "Psychology 01" seldom or never raised a hand or asked a question, and seldom or never came to me voluntarily. They ordinarily sat in the back of the room, whispering gossip unrelated to the class, and also disturbed classes by their noisy and long-drawn-out speaking. They may well be aware that talking in class does entail a good deal of trouble for the teacher and the other earnest students. However, they couldn't seem to stop. Why did they continue to talk during class? I decided to give them an assignment: self-analysis about the psychology of talking in class, and made them hand in a paper about it before last summer vacation. The present paper discusses the results of their selfanalyses.
