Description
In ancient Japan where Buddhist temples were controlled by government, monks called “syami” (沙彌) were officials of lower rank in charge of magic. On the other hand, there was anothor group of practitioners equally called “syami,” who were engaged in magic out of govermental control. Some of them were believed to be extraordinary persons endowed with supernatural power. They were called “onzin-no-hiziri” (隠身の聖) and stories of their miracles were collected by Kyaukai (景戒) the editor of the Nihonryauiki (日本靈異記).
