説明

0: To compensate for the lack of the knowledge of Piovano Arlotto, almost forgotten even in Italy, I will try to draw a profile of an old book composed of his episodes and his words. I : The book titled ‘Mottoes and Jokes of Piovano Arlotto’, written soon after the long life(1396-1484) of this priest, is composed of a short biography and 218 chapters which are mainly short and about 60 percents of them can settle in a page. 2 : Almost all the episodes happened in his lifetime, especially after his forties during which he went on voyages to northern Europe as a priest of merchant galleys. The main stages of episodes were the Florentine city (more than 30%), and the share of the parish of San Cresci which he maintained amounts to more than 16%. This is a valuable document of the lives in the neighboring districts of Florence of the 15th century. The supporting actors of the episodes of Arlotto were mainly Florentine citizens. Second to them, the prists entered rather often in the stages. Arlotto’s relations with them were full of stress and competitions. This is also a precious and humorous document of every day life of the priesthood of this era. The share of farmers is relatively little, but we cannot help admiring Arlotto’s efforts to help the lives of his poor parishioners. Nobles entered the stages not so often, but even kings and a Pope conversed with Arlotto intimately. 3 : In this work, we find very often that Arlotto was trapped in some difficult situations. Sometimes he got out of them with the help of his speeches (I-A), or with his actions (I-B), or with both actions and speeches (I-B-A). But naturally we find more often the cases in which Arlotto spoke spontaneously (II-A), or acted spontaneously (II-B). As we see through the title, the types of I-A and II-A occupy the main part of this book, but in the types of I-B and II-B, we find the most interesting episodes of cruel practical jokes or of benevolent actions. 4 : We don't know who wrote this book. But we can presume easily main parts of episodes were spoken once by Arlotto himself and in this meaning, the real auther of this book was Arlotto himself.
