Description

Recently archeological and environmental studies led to the discovery of the Yangtze civilization in the Yangtze valley, China, which developed an urban revolution based on paddy rice cultivation at early times. This discovery prompts to questions such as what are the geographical characteristics of the city, what were the conditions for ancient irrigated paddy fields and if those systems continued until today, disappeared, or were modified to some extent. The main objective of this study is to compare trends of areal changes in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river, and to correlate them with modern problems from an environmental-historical viewpoint. Special consideration was given to the evolution of the irrigation systems. The present paper is focused in the Liyang plain, Hunan Province in the middle reach of Yangtze river. The field survey was done in the region around Lixian county including Chengtoushan ruins, the most typical early ancient city.
