Description
This paper clarified the continuation situation and problems for preservation and re-utilization of old waterways for irrigation channeled before the modern period in old urbanized areas, by researching of 53 cities reorganized as a city in the Meiji Era. 44 cities are clarified the existence result of old waterways and 25 cities remain those of total 413.5 km with about 81.8% open waterway sections. Forever preservation and re-utilization for them haven't improved well except a few advanced municipalities. From questionnaire survey for residents along 4 old waterways in Nagano City, following problems are found : better unity of garden design for boundary area, closer connection between waterways and district planning and closer cooperation of residents, administrative sections and irrigation associations.
