Abstract

This paper discusses graduate survey as a method measuring the outcome of higher education, assessing pedagogical provisions and activities, and planning future improvements and developments in each higher education institution. It is clearly found that the method of graduate survey in mid-term span is one of the most relevant approaches for the outcome assessment, among various methods including student evaluation of class, any performance measures at the time of graduation, internal rate of return in education and so on. Two examples of large graduate survey projects, i.e. a large comparative study in Europe and Japan, and a collaborative study of junior colleges in Kyushu, are examined on these methodologies, findings and implications. Some further measures reguired to implement a graduate survey, such as management of privacy of graduates related with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information, are also discussed.
