説明
Caesar's Bevenge is the only play that has survived as a contemporary Caesar play to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. These two plays commonly consist of the same historical events, such as Brutus's cospiracy, Caesar's assassination and Antony's victory over the republicans. Many Shakespearian scholars, therefore, have referred to this play in the course of investigating Julius Caesar's sources. As a result of it, some of them regard this play as a subsidiary source of Julius Caesar. And other scholars are still in doubt on the supposition that Shakespeare was the debtor of this play. But though this play is anonymous and there is no record of its performance, it is mightily probable that this play had been one of the popular revenge tragedies in that days. So the trial to appreciate what sort of a play Caesar's Revege is will be sure to promote our interest in Julius Caesar as an Elizabethan drama. The aim of this research is induced from such an intention. For the purpose of effective discussion, this dissertation is to be divided into three parts ; (1) The outline of this tragedy, comparing with that of Julius Caesar. (2) The influence of this play on Julius Caesar. (3) The characteristics of Caesar's Revenge as a contemporary Caesar play. After these attempts have been made and its dramatical accomplishments are examined, we are sure to suppose that the followinge have become enlightened with some certainty. (1) Caesar's Bevenge is entirely under the influence of French Senecanism, and it belongs to a very different kind of revenge tragedy. (2) Therefore, it is quite improbable that Shakespeare took advantage of this play when he composed his Julius Caesar. He would willingly have avoided to be influenced by such a revenge play as Caesar's Revenge.
