抄録

The purpose of this study is to analyze the present situation of children who are compelled to work as domestic servants in Bangladesh. On the pretext of a solution of North-South problem, first world countries invested a lot of aid-fund in Bangladesh. But the problems of poverty, starvation and illiteracy are still serious, and have a direct effect on the weakest members of society. This makes the sacrifice of the poorest, women and children. Among them, children are enforced to hard labour due to their serious poverty. In Bangladesh, the field investigation was conducted about the labour of children ranged 5 to 14 years old. About 20% of all children were compelled to hard work. The problem of domestic servants employed fulltime on a residential basis is especially difficult to investigate. Most of these domestic servants are girls and in order to work they have to leave their rural villages. Not only they worked for very long time, but paid so little. Also, they are kept in their employer's house and often abused physically or mentally by the employer, too. For these reasons, they are deprived of the opportunity of entering school, literacy and valuable childhood. Their existence becomes like a slave who is isolated from society. Such practices grossly infringe the human rights of children. At present, a small number of local NGOs are developing support activities for such children in Bangladesh. Especially, the philosophy and activities of SHOISHAB NGO are worthy of remarkable. The stuffs are eager to promote the diffusion of the literacy educational programme for child domestic servants. These support activities are to rescue these children and recover their human rights. Therefore, these activities should be positively supported. Before anything else, many problems of domestic servants arise because of the poverty of rural villages. Accordingly, appropriate support for rural development that put the poorest first is necessary.
