The theme of this essay is an attempt to analyse Mrs. Joan Robinson's latest work, the Rate of Interest and Other Essays, 1952. In my recent review on her Essay on Marxian Economics, I raised a question that while she insists on the departure from the labour theory of value, to which I agree, she seems to conceal, consciously or unconsciously, the important issue of the trend of the capitalistic development behind her theory, In spite of my great interest in her latest book on the model of an expanding economy, to my regret, however, I have to confess that my question is still unsolved completely. Though she conceives the connection between the cycle and the trend is more intimate and more complicated than any systematic theory, her analysis is rather vaguely presented. From this it seems to follow that her dynamic theory is not completely constructed in this work. A weak point in her argument, in my opinion, is found in the very fact that she denies the connection between her model and the cycle. Thus, in her view, to what use can her model be applied? In this respect I have no room for doubt that she is two sided. On the one hand, as a Marxist, she shows that she cannot strongly expect a capitalist system enjoying continuous expansion. On the other hand, she as a non-Marxist, fails to lay the main emphasis upon the determinants in the trade cycle.
