In this paper, we reported on the results of a questionnaire survey conducted to elucidate regional differences in linguistic behavior in Japan. The participants were university students in the Kanto and Kansai regions, indicated the following facts:

- The subjects of the Kansai region were superior in their, 〈consideration〉, 〈gesture expressness〉 and 〈talkativeness〉, and inferior in 〈indirectness〉.

- The subjects of the Kanto region were superior in their, 〈indirectness〉, 〈formularity〉and 〈consideration〉.

- The subjects of both the Kanto and Kansai regions were superior in their ability to make remarks, but the subjects of the Kansai region were characterized by being superior in engaging in monologues.

- In scenes where there was the potential of making the other party lose face, the subjects in the Kanto region chose the linguistic behavior with a high degree of indirectness, while those of the Kansai region chose direct linguistic behavior.

Through these analyses, we showed a new method for the elucidation of regional differences in linguistic behavior.

本稿では、言語行動の全国的な地域差解明のために行った調査の結果を報告した。関東と関西、それぞれの地域で大学生を対象に行ったアンケート調査の結果、以下のことが明らかになった。

・関西地方は、〈配慮性〉、〈動作顕示性〉、〈積極性〉の面で優位である。〈間接性〉においては、直接的ととれる特徴がある。

・関東地方では、〈間接性〉、〈定型性〉、〈配慮性〉の面で優位である。

・関東、関西両地域ともに〈発言性〉の面で優位だが、関西地方は独話場面での優位さという特徴がある。

・関東地方では、相手の面子をつぶす可能性があるような場面で〈間接性〉の高い言語行動を選択し、関西地方では直接的な言語行動を選択する。

これらの分析を通して、言語行動の地域差を明らかにする手法について、新たな一つの方向性を示した。
