Masahisa Uemura was a representative of Protestant Christian missionary, theologian and educator in the Meiji period, at the time of the second coming of Christianity to Japan. He was also the person who established the Evangelical Church in Japan.In this article, I analyse his understanding of Evangelism and Christian apologetics in The Weekly Evangelist, a weekly magazine, in his earlier activities. The Weekly Evangelist was punished because of an article justifying Kanzo Uchimura's lse-majest affair. The period saw the rise of conflicts between traditional Japanese thought and Christian thought. Even today, it is difficult for the Christian mission in Japan. In this article, I want to get a grasp of apologetics to Japanese people by examining the Uemura's apologetics.

植村正久は、キリスト教が再伝した明治時代を代表するプロテスタント・キリスト教伝道者、神学者、教育者である。また日本における福音主義キリスト教は植村によって確立されたと言っても過言ではない。本稿では、植村の初期の文書活動となる週刊誌『福音週報』を資料として、彼が、キリスト教の伝統のない地盤にどのようにキリスト教を説明しようとしたのか、植村自身の福音理解への過程と、キリスト教弁証の方法に焦点をあてて分析する。とくに『福音週報』は内村鑑三の不敬事件を弁明する記事により、創刊から僅か1年で発行停止処分を受けることになるもので、キリスト教と日本の伝統的思想との摩擦が表面化してくる時期のものである。現代に至ってもキリスト教伝道が困難と言われる日本であるが、初期キリスト教指導者植村のキリスト教弁証を分析することにより、現代における弁証の手がかりにしたいと考えるのである。
