Description
In "Hebrews" (the New Testament V, Iwanami 1996, 83-131) Dr. M. Kobayashi has translated Heb 1:8 (LXX 44:7) as follows: God is your throne, for ever and ever. Also Heb 1:9 (LXX 44:8b): so God, your God has poured you the oil of joy.... In these verses Kobayashi takes o θεos (v. 8, 9) as nominative and o θεos σoν (v.9) as its appositive. So I judge that he, as he quotes these verses from Ps., avoids calling Jesus God. That is, he thinks that Heb. calls Jesus Son of God or High Priest and not God. So quoting Ps., he keeps this principle. Is this judgement on Christology of Heb. correct? The quoted LXX text of Heb. 1:8 is much corrected. For example, σoν next to βασiλειαs is changed to αντoν in some important codeces. If Kobayashi takes this reading, his translation is consistent. But he takes the reading σoν. So the problem becomes complicated. The same problem exists in 10:7. Here LXX text depicts a scene in which Christ is speaking to his Father. So o θεos means God the Father. The problem is that Kobayashi takes this o θεos as vocative without commentating. If he admits this, he must have also read as such at 1:8 and 9. As he did not do so, we should say he has intentionally avoided regarding Jesus as God. The Christological expressions in Heb. lay emphasis on mediaion between God and men. It does not mean, however, to draw Jesus toward men, but to emphasize the side of Jesus to live solidarity with men, having much the nature of God. So it will not destroy basically the Christology of this letter, to include in it the sentence which calls Jesus God. I think it will be appropriate if we read o θεos in 1:8 as vocative indicating Jesus.
