This essay is an attempt to closely analyze "The Boarding House" in Dubliners by James Joyce. It reveals the structural ingenuity of the story, and examines the motives, both overt and covert, of the main characters. Depending on the perspective, Mrs Mooney's character can be interpreted in a number of ways, as may the implications of Polly Mooney's reverie.
