抄録

Musical activities involving the piano in early child care education are frequent in Japan. University teacher training programmes instruct teachers in playing children's songs. However, in terms of students' experience, there is often a large time gap between learning to play the piano and other musical instruments at college and their previous musical experiences. This paper thus explores students' experience with music till they start university. It not only analyses how pre-university musical experiences affect students' progress with the piano while they are in school and the acquisition of the skill required for playing the piano, but also clarifies issues in piano education.
