At the turn of the century, ethnic Chinese are expanding their number and economic power very rapidly in the whole world and showing very different patterns of international migration. In the past they concentrated in Southeast Asia and the US. However, nowadays they are expanding mainly to the three English speaking developed countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the US, Canada and Australia, and to Europe, especially Western Europe. In terms of the rate of increase of the ethnic Chinese population, those going to the West European countries might be the highest. In the twenty-first century, Russia, including the Far East area, might be one of the largest receiving countries of ethnic Chinese. In this paper, I would like to give a brief history and describe the current status of the ethnic Chinese in Europe.
