In documents on the history of school architecture, I discovered the existence of the setsuseishitsu (health care room), which would likely be the origin of the school health office. A setsuseishitsu was established for the purpose of health care in 1869 at the school that was the forerunner of Tokyo University. One such room was also established at a kindergarten in Osaka in 1901. In the latter case it was known by this name until 1952. As a result of having examined a wide variety of documents concerning the health care room, I was able to identify the possibility that the health care room was the origin of todayʼs health office. Furthermore, I was able to confirm the fact that there was a room called the yogoshitsu at the elementary school of Yamanashi prefecture, as noted in documents on the history of school architecture. As a result of having considered process and background of the establishment of the room, I am able to conclude that the setting up of the room was closely related to a series of measures on school hygiene at that time. In addition, I believe that the name derives from yogo ― an educational theory of this time period.
