Description

In May 1998, a revolutionary movement for democratization occurred in Indonesia, and the 32 year -long presidency of Soeharto was brought to an end. As for the background, there was not only people's discontent with the government, but also an economic instability made worth by the Asian currency crisis that started in Thailand in July, 1997. Under the presidency of Soeharto, the middle class grew, but, ironically, it was the young people of this class who were the main leaders of the revolutionary movement. The revolution was a big step in the democratization process, which has continued progressing since then. In this report, the author looks back on the revolutionary process, referring to newspaper reports, and examines the maturity of democracy in Indonesia as a representative example of developing countries.
