英語教育における低学力学習者の認知的特徴についての研究は、実証的にはほとんどなされていない。事例研究により、語の meaning が存在するが、文構造の form が存在しないこと、そのため語の出現順序にしたがって、英文の意味を理解しようとする特徴を明らかにした。このため、文構造の階層的思考ができず直線的思考しかできない。この認知的特徴は、英語習得の中間言語的存在として認めるのが妥当である。

Little theoretical and experimental research on unsuccessful langauge learners' cognitive features has been studied. This case study could clarify that word meaning exists before structural meaning. Therefore, unsuccessful langauge learners try to understand the sentence according to the order in which the words appear in it. This fact shows that unsuccessful language learners can understand the sentence in a linear fashion but cannot understand it hierarchically. It is natural that this should be recognized as the feature similar to interlangauge.
